For United States Citizens – Travel Visa Information
When a United States citizen travels to a foreign country she may need a travel visa for the country she is visiting. You can visit the US State Department’s website to check visa requirements for countries you plan to visit.
Watch the video to see how I look up visa requirements for a trip to Colombia. (Please note that this is information for US citizens only.)
Along with checking whether you need a travel visa, also make sure to check the passport requirements of the country you are planning to visit. Click To Tweet
- Some countries require that your passport have an unused, empty page for their stamp.
- Some countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months after your date of travel.
- There may be other requirements for your U.S. passport that the country you are visiting requires.
Obtaining travel visas
Many countries now allow a US citizen to apply for a visa online. You'll usually need your passport information and will need to pay their visa fees. Click To Tweet However, you may also need to share additional document such as:
- A photograph
- Your birth certificate
- Your marriage certificate
- Other requirements.
When you apply online make sure all your information is correct – no typos! We once made a one-letter typo in my visa application for Australia and when we arrived I almost was not allowed to stay. You don’t want to have to turn around and head back to the US because of an error on your travel visa!
Requirements for travel visas change over time
Check several times before your trip to make sure nothing has changed regarding a visa. You may find at first that a visa isn’t required from a US citizen for the country you are visiting, but this can change before you take your trip. Check it several times.
